As the name states, the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel has a reddish-golden mantle that stretches from its head to shoulders. The squirrels also have a black and white striped back with a buff or gray coloration. Golden-mantle Ground Squirrels can be found in forests, meadows, chaparral, and sagebrush feeding on nuts (especially pine nuts), seeds, flowers, insects, small birds, and reptiles.
