American Black Bears thrive in areas within thick vegetation mountain areas ranging from 900 to 3,000 meters in elevation. Female bears can weigh anywhere between 85 to 520 lbs and males can weigh between103 to 900 lbs! American Black Bears are most likely active at twilight. As they are not active predators, their diet consists of grasses, roots, tubers, seeds, grains, nuts, fruits, carrion, and insects. Young black bears are able to learn food aquistion strategies as they have a slow maturation.

There has only been one sighting of an American Black Bear within VESR reserves.
