While orginally thought of as a subspecies of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, the Red-naped Sapsucker warrants its own distinct species due to the red patch on the back of thier heads. These sapsuckers will drill hundrends of tiny holes in trees to aquire sap but the trees still survive after this alteration. Clinging vertically to trees, you can spot these birds living in deciduous forests by thier red cap and throat and white and black stripes along thier eyes.
