The Great Horned Owl are large owls and get their name from the two protruding "eyebrows" of feathers on their heads resembling horns. Their gray-brown patterned body is contrated with their mask of a solid rust color. Being nocturnal, you can spot these birds at dusk or before dawn hunting for rodents, scorpions, hares, skunks, geese, and raptors. Great Horned Owls mostly consume mammals and can take down prey larger than themselves. Their low-pitched cooing can be heard across North America and are typically close to forests, swamps, orchards, and woodlands.
